The DX14 leads with 30-mile range for extended travel. All models fold for portability. You will find no non-folding options here. There are no fixed-frame choices. How to choose the right Rubicon power wheelchair
-
Check weight capacity needs
You must verify that the chair supports your body weight plus any carried items. The Rubicon DX01 offers a 300 lb limit, which suits heavier users or those needing extra stability. If you are lighter, this capacity still ensures robust frame integrity. Always compare the rated limit against your actual weight to prevent motor strain or frame damage during daily use.
-
Match range to travel habits
Your daily distance determines the necessary battery range. The Rubicon DX14 provides a 30-mile range, ideal for travelers who cover long distances without frequent charging stops. The DX12 offers 25 miles, suitable for balanced daily errands. If your trips exceed these limits, you will need to plan charging breaks or choose a model with higher capacity to avoid running out of power.
-
Assess motor power for terrain
Motor wattage affects how well the chair climbs inclines and handles uneven surfaces. The DX01 uses a 500W motor, while the DX12 features a 600W dual motor setup. Higher wattage provides better torque for all-terrain use or steep ramps. If you frequently navigate grass or gravel, prioritize the 600W option for smoother performance and reduced strain on the battery during climbs.
-
Consider folded dimensions for storage
If you store the chair in a car trunk or small apartment, folded size matters. The DX01 folds to 28 x 16 inches, making it highly portable. The DX14 is also folding but optimized for range rather than compactness. Measure your storage space before buying. A smaller folded footprint allows easier transport in standard vehicles, while larger models may require specialized racks or ample garage space.
-
Evaluate chair weight for lifting
The total weight determines how easily you or a caregiver can lift the chair into a vehicle. The DX01 weighs 70 pounds, which is manageable for most adults. Heavier frames often provide more durability but increase lifting difficulty. If you frequently load the chair alone, choose a lighter model. Ensure the weight rating aligns with your physical ability to handle the chair safely during transfers.
